The Best Time to Exercise to Lose Weight

You want to lose weight. You've got a new diet plan ready; all you need to do is add in your exercise routine. You need to move your body to lose the maximum amount of weight. But when is the best time to exercise to lose weight? Morning - and the following will tell you why. You literally wake up your body when you begin the day with physical activity, and you will reap the benefits throughout your day.

Why Morning Exercise?

Start your morning with exercise and you will set the pace for your whole day. Your metabolism will jump into high gear and stay there, allowing your body to burn the maximum calories all day long. Your energy level will be increased for the day, plus you will have your exercise finished before it can be interrupted by your normal daily schedule.

You have choices in the types of exercises you should do. Running is a great way to begin the morning and burns calories quickly. If you prefer to walk, make sure you do so at a fast pace to get your heart rate up. Or go to the gym and take advantage of the variety of equipment and classes available.

Once you decide on a plan, implement it and stick with it. Think of your morning exercise as a standing appointment; pencil it in your appointment calendar. It will not take long for your body to get used to the new routine and you will see results in your overall weight loss.

Sleep Benefits

Exercising in the morning will help you get a better night's sleep. Exercise is physically stressful for your body, and in order for your body to repair itself your brain will allow you to sleep more deeply for longer periods. Lack of sleep also affects the hormones that control your appetite. If you have a bad night's sleep you are more likely to overeat the next day (see Resource 1). Strive for at least 20 minutes of exercise per day, six days a week, to improve your quality of sleep. Exercising late at night is not conducive to a good night's sleep as your body will not have had sufficient time to relax before bed.

Getting Started

Talk to your doctor before beginning any new exercise regimen.
