How to Get Rid of a Yeast Infection in Men

Yeast infections in men often cause no symptoms. When symptoms do occur, they may include a red rash, burning or itching on the head of the penis, and pain during urination. Men may contract a yeast infection from having unprotected sex with a partner who has a yeast infection. Antibiotic use, diabetes, and HIV also increase the risk of yeast infections in men.

Instructions

    1

Apply an over-the-counter antifungal cream, such as Monistat, directly to the affected area. According to the Mayo Clinic, the cream should be applied twice daily for at least one week.

    2

Avoid having sex with your partner until both of you are free of yeast infection symptoms and have completed treatment. Otherwise, reinfection is likely.

    3

Retract your foreskin, if it is present, and clean thoroughly to prevent irritation. Irritation increases the likelihood of a yeast infection and may make treatment more difficult.

    4

Keep your genital area dry as much as possible. This will help inhibit the growth of yeast and help clear up your infection.

    5

Take an oral antifungal medication, such as Diflucan or Nizoral. These medications are available only by prescription. A single dose is often all that is required to get rid of a yeast infection in men. Michigan State University warns that Nizoral may damage the liver. Therefore, a liver function test may be required prior to treatment.

    6

Treat any underlying medical conditions that may be causing your yeast infection. If you are diabetic, you must get your blood glucose levels under control to get rid of your yeast infection and prevent recurrence.

    7

Discontinue use of spermicide and antibiotics until your yeast infection is gone. Speak with your doctor about alternatives to spermicide if you notice an association between use of these products and frequent yeast infections.

    8

Schedule an appointment with your doctor if your symptoms fail to improve within one week, if you notice a worsening of symptoms or a penile discharge, or if you develop a fever, blisters, or other signs of infection.
