Foods for a Low Protein Diet

Foods for a Low Protein Diet

People eat low-protein diets for a variety of reasons, including wanting to eat healthfully and also to survive, if there is a diseased or weak organ within the body. The typical American diet consists of 12 percent to 15 percent protein. The suggested low-protein diet should consist of about half of that or even less, at about 4 percent to 8 percent. People on a low-protein diet should also decrease their sodium intake. It's important to consult a physician before starting any diet.

Sandwiches

Meats should still be consumed for some protein, but they should be consumed in smaller quantities. Sandwiches are a great way eat less meat and still be satisfied. Make sure to use thinly sliced meats and fill the sandwich with vegetables like cucumber, celery, lettuce or tomatoes.

Soups

    Vietnamese Pho Soup, no meat

Soups are a great way to eat only small amounts of protein with each meal. For creamy broth, use milk substitutes. You can add rice or pasta, which are filling but have little protein, to make the soup more of a meal. Vietnamese pho is an excellent example of this -- a noodle soup with delectable broth and noodles, but no meat. Soup can be eaten in between bigger meals as well to help stave off hunger.

Fruits and other Sugars

Blueberries are a perfect low-protein snack

Fruits have virtually no protein and are healthy, so a steady snacking diet of fruits will be a great way to make a low-protein diet less difficult for someone just starting out on it. Try a banana, a handful of grapes or an apple between low-protein meals. Sugary foods like candy also have little protein but eating too much candy to stay on a low-protein diet is sort of like robbing Peter to pay Paul -- it's not making you any healthier.
