Low-Sugar Alcohol Drinks

Low-Sugar Alcohol Drinks

One downside of most alcoholic drinks is the high amount of sugar they contain. High sugar intake can lead to weight gain, diabetes, anxiety and myriad other health problems. For those wanting to enjoy alcoholic drinks without consuming a lot of sugar, there are options. It is important to remember, however, that even low-sugar alcoholic drinks will affect the body's glucose levels and therefore should be consumed in moderation. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Diet Mixers

Although they're contained in traditional mixers, regular sodas have extremely high sugar contents. Rather than mixing spirits such as gin, rum, vodka and whiskey with regular soda, switch to diet soda for the same basic taste without the sugar. For example, the popular "gin and Coke" can easily be swapped out for a "gin and Diet Coke" without compromising much flavor.

Dry Wines

Red wine, dryer white wines and sherry are better options than fruitier wines and wine coolers when avoiding sugar. Sweet wines can seem more appealing because they lack the bitterness of dryer wines, but developing a taste for dryer wine is a much healthier option.

Light Beer

When compared with heavier beers, light beers such as lagers usually have lower sugar contents. Heavy beers such as ales, porters and stouts tend to be high in sugar and are often sweetened in the brewing process. Flavored beers, such as apricot or strawberry ales, are also high in sugar and should be avoided.
