What Foods Contain High Potassium?

Potassium is a mineral that serves many purposes in the body. It is regulated by the kidneys and it helps to lower sodium levels, which in turn lowers blood pressure. It also helps control muscle contractions and helps with nerve function. In athletics, low potassium levels can lead to muscle cramps and cardiovascular problems. This is what happens when a lot of muscle contractions and sweating is going on. Potassium can be found in supplement form, but this is not the best option for people who might have high blood pressure. In any case, potassium can be found naturally in several different foods.

Meat

Meat is known for its high protein and iron content. This is especially the case with red meat and dark meat. But several meats are also high in potassium. including chicken, turkey, ham and pork. Some fish is also high in potassium, including tuna, salmon, clams, halibut and cod.

Dairy Products

Dairy products are known for their high calcium and protein content, which are essential for the formation of bones, teeth and muscle mass. Another aspect dairy products bring to the table is their potassium content. Milk, yogurt, buttermilk and even ice cream are all high in potassium. But these products can also be high in fat, so common sense must be exercised.

Beans

Beans are a type of legume which means they are in the form of a pod. They are a source of B-vitamins and they have also been known to be a good source of fiber which aids in digestion and helps block the absorption of cholesterol. Beans are also high in potassium. Some examples in particular include white beans, lima beans and pinto beans.

Fruit

Fruits are nutrient dense and, on average, low in calories. They are high in fiber, have high water content and provide sources of vitamins. Some fruits are particularly high in potassium as well. Some examples of these are avocados, apricots, dates, prunes, honeydew, cantaloupe and bananas.

Vegetables

Vegetables are similar to fruits in the fact that they are nutrient dense, low in calories and have high water and fiber contents. Several vegetables and greens are high in potassium, including carrots, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, parsnips, artichokes, tomatoes, sweet potatoes and baby spinach. Tomato juice is also high in potassium.
