4Eat good fats. Monounsaturated fats, polyunsaturated fats and omega-3 fatty acids are healthy fats, according to the American Diabetes Association. Fat in foods helps to keep you satisfied longer and slows the absorption of sugar into the bloodstream. This allows you to maintain a stable blood sugar level, avoiding both highs and lows. Avocados, for example, are a great source of healthy dietary fats. Other healthy fats include canola oil, olive oil, cashews, pecans, peanuts, almonds, sesame seeds, sunflower oil, albacore tuna, salmon and sardines.
